GRAEME DOWNES | APRA Member since 1985
In 1981, Graeme formed the seminal New Zealand band, The Verlaines, whose recorded debut appeared on the legendary ‘Dunedin Double EP’ released by Flying Nun records. This release, now deeply embedded in NZ music mythology, brought the ‘Dunedin Sound’ – an aesthetic that has influenced artists as far reaching as Bill Callahan and R.E.M. – to the attention of the world.
Still writing and releasing music after 30 years with The Verlaines, Graeme is now a Senior Lecturer in Composition at Otago University. He holds a PhD in music (for his thesis on the work of Mahler) and has research interests in contemporary musical composition as well as in the work of Mahler and Shostakovich.
