What is the best thing about making music?
Making other people happy, expressing creativity, having the best outlet for emotion, creating a body of works, Creative Flow.
What is the hardest thing about making music?
Making a living from it .. Having people understand that it is your living and why you are dedicated to it when it can be a struggle at times.
How important are public performance royalties to you and in keeping the NZ music world ticking?
Very … its one good source of income if the music is played and the royalties collected
From strumming / humming / creating the first notes of a song through to a completed mastered recording, on average how long does it take you to write and record a song?
Sometimes it can take a few minutes and flow like water out of a tap .. sometimes you can go back a couple of times to it over days ..
All costs considered, on average how much does it cost you to write and record a song?
That’s a hard one … as I never thought about an hourly rate for song writing but production is not cheap maybe minimum 4 to 5 a song .. a video for it 5 to 10k minimum for an indie artist who is serious and good production value.
Over and above money you make from music (public performance royalties, live performance, licensing and CD / digital sales), do you have to supplement the cost of writing and recording music with money you make from other sources?
Yes I work as a publicist and occasionally in Film production. Nice because I can keep a hand in the entertainment business and the skills come in handy on my own work
Why do you do what you do – why do you make music?
Because I can’t imagine not doing it ..
What is the most helpful songwriting tip you’ve learnt?
Write from the heart, Don’t be too literal, use half rhymes .. think about structure and arrangement as you go
What are three artists / bands you are excited about at the moment?
I really like Australian singer songwriter Luke O’Shea’s material, I like Australian songstress Sara Storer and have a huge soft spot for local girl Kaylee Bell .
What are you working on at the moment / tell us about your latest release / project?
Releasing the singles from my new album ‘Horseshoe Rodeo Hotel’, Starting with HOME, The CD is an eclectic mix of songs from Country to Rock to World. It’s been a beautiful journey creating the album. Lots of lovely people on it - Three Dog Night’s Paul Kingery, Nik Brown from the Warratahs, Graham Brazier, Brendan Dugan, Liam Ryan and more. Loving sharing this work with the world. Have loved working with my producer Alan Jansson on this 2nd album together.
