MLT Songwriting Awards
Open to all songwriters and with prize money totaling $3.000, entries from all over New Zealand and Australia are received for the annual M.L.T. Songwriting Awards. The music and lyrics of all entries must be deemed original by the judges and all songs must not be commercially released prior to judging.
Gold Guitar Awards
The New Zealand Gold Guitar Awards are open for artists who have not recorded a product for sale. Contestants may enter as an individual, in a duet and/or as part of a group. Contestants compete in either the junior, intermediate, senior or 40 Plus sections, depending on their age. There are a variety of sections, including male and female solo, gospel, traditional, country rock, duet, yodeling, vocal group, group NZ composition and instrumental. High quality bands provide backing for contestants.
Youth Focused Awards
Play It Strange
Play it Strange is an annual national secondary schools songwriting competition. It is open to secondary school students, and also earns entrants NCEA credits.
Smokefreerockquest is the biggest and most influential nation-wide youth event held in New Zealand, reaching audience numbers in excess of 100,000 every year. Founded in 1989 by music teachers Glenn Common and Pete Rainey, who now run Rockquest Promotions full time out of Nelson, it has become a New Zealand institution. There are several prizes available, including the APRA Lyric Award.
Smokefree Pacifica Beats is a nationwide music competition for students from Years 7 – 13 that promotes the use of traditional Maori and Pasifika identity in a contemporary performance environment. This event is the younger, brown cousin of the smokefreerockquest. Youth Performance Trust have been looking after it since 2006 and entrants in the past have included; Adeaze, Nesian Mystik and Spacifix. There are several prizes available, including the APRA Best Song Award.
