Our radio licences gives radio stations access to our worldwide repertoire over two million songs. APRA AMCOS offers both Broadcast and Reproduction licences for commercial, community and IWI stations.

Commercial Radio

Commercial radio stations are operated for profit and are usually funded by advertising revenue. APRA AMCOS offers both Broadcast and Reproduction licences to Commercial broadcasters.

Broadcast Licences Rates

Licensees pay fees monthly based on a percentage of the station’s gross advertising revenue in that month. The rate varies depending on the amount of APRA works broadcast by the station as a percentage of the station’s on-air time.

Music use percentage Percentage of gross earnings payable (exclusive of GST)
50 – 100% 2.9%
0 – 49.99% 1%

Reproduction Licences

We offer commercial radio stations a choice of reproduction licences that enable them to reproduce production music for use in ads, Station IDs, sponsorships, announcements or programs. These agreements do not cover the reproduction of commercially released music in advertisements. For information on regarding using commercially released music in advertisements click here.

Commercial radio stations provide quarterly returns which detail each work and the number of times that work was broadcast during the period. These reports are used for the distribution of royalties.

Access & IWI Radio

Community non-commercial Radio Broadcasters are generally one of two main types: Access or Iwi. These broadcasters derive income from a variety of sources that includes limited advertising, government appropriation (NZ On Air funding) and sponsorship or subscription revenue.

We have different licence schemes operating for community non commercial radio, depending on the station's status, and each type of community radio service is dealt with separately for licensing purposes.

Broadcast Licences

Licences are held by individual radio broadcasters.

Reproduction Licences

We offer community stations a choice of reproduction licences that enable them to reproduce production music for use in ads, Station IDs, sponsorships, announcements or programs. These agreements do not cover the reproduction of commercially released music in advertisements. For information on regarding using commercially released music in advertisements click here.

Low Power Radio

Low Power FM broadcasters are broadcasting services whose reception is limited by transmission power (under 1 watt) and reception area. These services can be received on standard radio sets but according to MBIE specifications are available on guard band frequencies only. The Low Power FM licence is for non-commercial stations that use advertising for cost recovery purposes only. The licence allows for limited revenue collection by the broadcaster - up to $10,000 per year.

The Low Power FM licence for APRA is administered through OneMusic - the licensing arm for Recorded Music NZ and APRA AMCOS. The OneMusic Low Power FM broadcast licence is the only licence low power FM stations need to broadcast and simulcast music online, giving stations access to a world-wide repertoire of over 5,000,000 songs from around the world.

It's important to note that the OneMusic Low Power FM licence does not include the permission to reproduce music, including production music.
