APO Looking For Communities Composer-In-Residence

The Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) is seeking a dynamic composer to work with its Connecting department across a variety of settings for a fixed term 2 year period as its Communities Composer.

The Communities Composer is a new role within the organisation that will have responsibilities in four key areas: Communities, Schools, University and Emerging Composers. Each of these groups has a unique connection to the APO and the role of Communities Composer will seek to build on these connections in varied artistic ways.

Across these four identified areas there will be opportunities to do the following:

  • Mentor tertiary level students through complex compositions
  • Arrangement of ‘classic’ works for use at Connecting events throughout the year
  • Support and judge secondary level students’ compositions as part of our Our Voice programme and other associated opportunities
  • Work with one targeted community in Auckland to develop a new commission for the orchestra that encapsulates this community

This is not an exhaustive list and other chances to orchestrate music and contribute to the wider composer community will exist for across the two-year period.

To be successful in this role you will need to be confident in communicating with a variety of people from all walks of life, in particular musicians, in building relationships with collaborative partners and other arts organisations, and in liaising with communities to identify and maximise opportunities for growth.

A solid understanding of education processes and experience in community and/or outreach programmes is desired and a passion for your work is essential.

Please apply in writing with:

  • A letter of application outlining why you are interested in this position
  • Your CV, with an outline of your experience and qualifications
  • Two examples of compositions you have written for large ensembles

Applications should be sent to Katie Deller:

Closing date for applications is 5pm, 24th November
