Facebook music licensing deals – update for members

Wednesday, 31 Jan 2018

It’s widely understood from press reports that labels, publishers and performing rights and mechanical rights organisations (like APRA AMCOS) are in discussion with, or have recently confirmed, music licensing deals with Facebook. Often some of these stories only relate to deals unfolding in the US.

Here’s a quick summary for those of you who are wondering what’s going on -

On the performing right side it’s simple -

  • APRA writers performing share royalties will continue to flow through the performing rights societies via applicable reciprocal agreements.

What about my reproduction right (or ‘publishing’ as it’s sometimes known)?

  • If you’re not published in the US and have ticked the ‘AMCOS represent me overseas’ box, rest assured we’ll keep you updated as we determine the best way to maximise your Facebook royalties in the US and around the world.
  • AU/NZ Publishers should check with their US Publisher to understand what arrangements they have in place in the US.

If you have further questions, you can contact your APRA AMCOS Writer Services or Publisher Relations representative.
