Mentored by Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and the late Dr HiriniMelbourne – the three of whom reconstructed the ancient traditions of the TaongaPuoro(singing treasures – the traditional instruments of Māori) from near extinction through painstaking scholarship and research - Horo has become an internationally renowned composer, performer and teacher of TaongaPuoro and is continuing to develop and share their voices through traditional as well as experimental performances and collaborations.
He has worked extensively with artists here and around the world - including the WeimarerStaatskapelle Orchestra, Dame KiriTe Kanawa, Dame Gillian Whitehead, NZ Trio, Moana and the Tribe, Luca Manghi, IarlaO’Lionaird and the Voices NZ Choir. Currently on the faculty of Waikato University, he is dedicated to developing his practice and communicating the unique sound and intrinsic significance of TaongaPuoro to New Zealanders and the world.
